pc: elle magazine
i always look forward to elle magazine's annual green issue. it never fails to inspire me to do more for the planet. this year, though, i was a little confused when the magazine arrived in my mailbox. there was this amazing photo of drew barrymore on the cover, underwater, with the headline "THE BLUE ISSUE: DESIGNERS GO ECO-CHIC". blue issue? what happened to my green issue? after reading the editor's letter, i put two and two together and it all made sense: besides the fact that the issue features several spreads on denim trends, the blue issue is centered around water -- "the one element so integral to everybody and everything on this planet."
we all know what climate change is doing to our environment -- here in LA, we've somehow experienced all four seasons in the span of seven days -- but the water pollution crisis is something that has only recently been put in the spotlight. experts say that only 3 percent of the planet's water is fresh, and of that fraction, only a third is readily available. crazy. i'm not going to go into detail, because the elle article "tapped out" (page 88) has all the information you need to learn about the current water shortage. but i will say that these facts have definitely opened my eyes to the importance of conserving water. it's the key reason why i turn off the faucet while brushing my teeth, or, when my dog needs a bath, i bring her in the shower with me. TMI?
the drew barrymore article was exactly what a drew barrymore article always is for me: inspiring. she's been my favorite actress since i was ten years old, and i've always looked up to her for her resilience and nonstop positive attitude. no matter what happens in her life, she always seems cheerful. i think it's that hippie, flower child thing that has always excited me. her photos were beautiful; i thought the underwater idea was pretty brilliant. she looked so ethereal (and that's definitely not a word i use every day). i would totally do an underwater photo shoot. with a wig on, though. my hair would be a nightmare.
as usual, i dog-eared about 100 pages so i could reference back to items that i want to buy but cannot afford. one of the things that caught my eye was an organic linen and flax cotton tank by wren. i guess a portion of the proceeds go to the save the whales foundation, which is awesome, but really i just love the blue whale sketched on it, and the cotton looks really soft and wispy. good for the whales, bad for my wallet. job well done, elle mag.
